A última vez que atualizei este blog foi há pouco mais de 2 meses. Como não quero que ele fiquei muito tempo sem conteúdo novo, decidi escrever este post, uma dica útil para quem usa o Plasma Desktop e headphones Bluetooth, e quer ver a percentagem de bateria na applet.

Esta dica aplica-se a EndeavourOS, Arch Linux e outras distribuições baseadas em Arch. Noutras, o path do ficheiro pode ser diferente, por isso terás de ter isso em consideração se pretenderes replicá-a no teu sistema. Para além disso, se usares uma distribuição com outro init system, como o runit, também terás de ter isso em consideração.

A minha experiência com a fibromialgia tem sido, no mínimo, horrível. E horrível é dizer muito pouco: aquilo por que tenho passado parece tirado de um pesadelo ou de um filme de terror. Não é à toa que o meu reumatologista descreve as dores que sinto como violentas, como podes ver na imagem que se segue.

Durante a tarde de ontem, foi votado em Comissão do Parlamento o projeto de lei que prevê o bloqueio de sites por IP, para além do que já acontece com o bloqueio por DNS. Ainda não sei o resultado da votação, mas tudo indica que há uma maioria parlamentar - composta por PS, PSD e CDS - que pretende a extensão do bloqueio por DNS aos IPs, de acordo com o Marcos Marado.

For a few months, I considered using the mirror service from Fosshost in userrepository.eu. The service results from a partnership between Fosshost and Fastly, giving projects access to several PoP’s around the globe.

Finally, a few days ago, I enabled the service. I also created a package with the mirror’s list, userrepository-mirrors, available in my repository and AUR. The package has all the instructions for enabling the mirrors and what to do if you already have userrepository in your /etc/pacman.conf configuration.

I love AUR. Being able to use a simple PKGBUILD to install a software not available in the official Arch repositories is a blessing. Sadly, its user experience and looks need improvements to bring it to the 21st century.

One of the things that bug me the most is the microscopic font size. I almost need a telescope to read the text.

To fix it, and make it smoother on the eyes, I created a dark theme for AUR. You’ll need to install the Stylus browser addon in order to use it. The CSS code is available as a Github Gist. Just click here to access the code.

How to disable a D-Bus service

In some situations, you might want to disable a D-Bus service. One of those is, for example, when you use Dunst (a notification daemon) with a window manager. Still, you don’t want it to replace the notification daemon from your desktop environment.

To disable it, you just need to add .disabled to the end of the target file name. Example:

sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.knopwob.dunst.service /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.knopwob.dunst.service.disabled

In the above example, Dunst will no longer replace Plasma Desktop notification daemon when using that amazing desktop environment, and all will be good with the world again. Victory! :)

Desde que comecei a ter sintomas de fibromialgia, já lá vão uns 9 meses, comecei também a ter dificuldades em dormir. Inicialmente pensei que fosse das dores, já que me acontece o mesmo quando tenho crises fortes da síndrome de cólon irritável. Os médicos diziam o mesmo: é das dores.

Passaram-se vários meses e os problemas do sono persistiram. As dores também. Entretanto descobri, por via de um colega de trabalho, uma loja próxima de mim que vende produtos à base de CBD e tornei-me cliente. As dores ficaram controladas, mas as dificuldades em dormir mantiveram-se.

Since the 24th of January, the date of the last blog post, I’ve added a shitload of new packages to userrepository.eu. Some highlights are sonobus, media-downloader-git, baru, dotgit, timeshift, filmulator and tramp.

Expect more packages, as I’m adding new ones frequently. The focus on new packages will probably be scientific tools and maybe a kernel. With that, I’ll probably have to increase the full build frequency from 8h to at least 9 hours.

A lot has happened since then. One of the main changes was the removal of several packages no longer present in AUR or really outdated. Some examples are peafox, marp and gimp-dbp.

Since my last blog post about Emacs (and the last post I published here), I’ve tested some Starter Kits. All of them were genuinely nice and came with a lot of tools included, but most of these tools were things I didn’t need.

Not a long time after that, I found a Reddit post about nano-emacs. Unlike the other Starter Kits, this one is plain and incredibly beautiful. It even got better recently with the addition of the writer-mode minor mode for org-mode, as you can see in the featured image on this post.

A few days ago, I decided to give Emacs another try. I’ve previously attempted to use this text-editor / operating system — probably about 10 years ago or maybe a bit more — but never got the hang of it.

A few years after my first try at Emacs, I discovered Markdown. Since then, I’ve used text editors with a GUI to write in this markup language. That was until two years ago when I encountered a Vim mode for Markdown and adapted it to my specific needs. It has been one of my main tools to write, but I don’t really like the Vim keybindings.

A 10 de Outubro, escrevi aqui sobre a minha experiência com fibromialgia. Passado pouco mais de um mês e várias sessões de fisioterapia depois, as únicas coisas que mudaram para melhor foram a nova medicação que me ajuda a dormir e já não sinto tanta rigidez nos músculos quando acordo. De resto, passo os dias com a sensação de que fui espancado e tenho algo a rasgar-me os músculos.

Há pouco mais de dois meses, num dia de folga, decidi esticar-me no sofá depois de almoço. Não houve qualquer razão particular para isto, foi apenas algo que me apeteceu; estava de folga e quis “lontrar” um bocadinho antes de lavar a louça e arrumar a cozinha.

Nem uma hora depois, comecei a sentir uma dor na região lombar. Mudei de posição mas não passou. Entretanto decidi deitar-me na cama para ficar mais direito. Uns minutos depois, a dor pareceu aliviar. Este alívio durou pouco tempo e num instante a dor intensificou.

Lately, I’ve been having some problems when building picom-ibhagwan-git and picom-tryone-git. The first one would build OK, but not the second one.

After a bit of debugging, I found out that it was a problem related to the way makepkg and git handle the cache when building these forks. This would also happen when adding the picom-git package: it would build because it’s the first package in alphabetical order and Jarvis builds the packages that way, but not the other two.

You might have noticed that Userrepository uses Cloudflare. I chose it for two main reasons: their ability to help mitigate (D)DoS attacks and to help hiding the IP address for the VM from script kiddies.

It’s not that I think Userrepository will ever be a target for a (D)DoS attack, but better safe than sorry. Also, I have more than enough automated failed SSH authentication attempts without revealing the IP: 441 blocked _IP_s and counting for one fail2ban ssh rule and 2 for another fail2ban ssh rule. I intend to tighten these rules in the near future.

Status on userrepository changes

It took me a while to update you about the latest changes to my Arch and Arch-compatible Linux distributions repository. But first, let me apologize for the delay: work, personal life and, for about 3 weeks now, a horrible back pain (that just doesn’t stop, even with an handful of medication) have kept me from doing this in the time frame I expected.

First on the “agenda”, I experimented with increasing the zstd compression level for the packages like I said I would do in my last post about the repository. The trade-off was not worth it: the increase in packaging time was far superior to the small decrease in package size. So, I’ll keep the zstd compression level to “-12” in the foreseeable future.

Hoje de manhã, ainda não eram 8h30, a esposa recebeu um SMS de um número estranho (5819PT). Ela pediu-me para ver a mensagem porque está a aguardar a receção de documentação através de uma transportadora e queria saber o estado do envio.

Quando vi a mensagem, reparei que o endereço é estranho e não é um que eu tenha visto ser usado pelos CTT ou alguma transportadora. Este endereço, ajoruc.com, é “coruja” escrito ao contrário e com um erro ortográfico. Isto pode ser apenas coincidência, mas fez-me desconfiar ainda mais.

Since the last post about my Arch (and Arch-compatible distributions) binary repository, I’ve added a few more packages. Some examples are the Mullvad VPN desktop client and nimdow, a window manager written in the Nim programming language. Or Emptty, an amazing display manager that I encourage you to try.

Despite adding more packages, the compilation and compression time only had a small increase and I’m still below the 5 hour mark. And I’ve kept the zstd “-12” compression level.

Emptty is one of the newest additions to userrepository.eu and already a favorite of mine. This CLI Display Manager is blazing fast and offers a few configuration options.

One of these options and my personal favorite is setting the MOTD, like the one you see on the post image. As far as I can tell, it only supports plain text and ANSI color escape codes. If the possibility for scripts arises, it can allow some really cool stuff.

Há alguns meses que não atualizava a minha lista de bloqueio, para adblockers, à merda do Nónio. Ela não me estava a dar problemas, por isso não senti necessidade de a rever.

No dia 21 de junho, no entanto, um dos developers do uBlock Origin abriu um bug por causa dos tipos de regras usadas, bug esse que está relacionado com outro reportado no repositório deste adblocker. TL;DR: estava a misturar filtros estáticos com regras dinâmicas.

Some notes about userrepository performance with the new provider

In the previous post, I wrote about how I changed the virtual machine provider from Scaleway to Hetzner. In the days following the transition, I timed how much it took to build all the packages and sync them to the webserver, so I could compare the new provider with the previous one.

The specs are very similar: 4 vCPUs and 8GB of RAM. There is one difference, however: with Scaleway, the vCPUs were some Intel low-end ones (although they’ve upgraded to AMD EPYC very recently) and with Hetzer they are AMD EPYC. And what a difference this makes.

Userrepository.eu is back (in beta)

After a small forced hiatus, userrepository.eu is back. The Covid-19 pandemic made a hit in my income and the wife’s income, so I had to temporarily suspend non-priority expenses. During this period, I had time to consider a few things about the future of the project and decided to change the provider from Scaleway to Hetzner, mostly because the Arch image they’re using is essentially abandonware.

If you’re reading this, you’ll probably know that Arch Linux changed the default package compression to ZSTD. In order to update or install any package, you’ll need a pacman version that supports this compression and up-to-date libraries. These requirements aren’t met in older Arch images, like the one used by Scaleway, so the only two solutions were installing another distribution, chrooting into it and hack an Arch install (the solution presented to me by Scaleway support) or change provider. The second option was the less time-consuming one.

Improving boot time

Today, I’ve decided to try and improve the boot time of my laptop, running EndeavourOS. There was no special reason for it other than “Why not?”.

The first thing I made was disabling or masking the following systemd services:

systemd-resolved disabled
tlp disabled
NetworkManager-wait-online disabled
lvm2-monitor masked
org.cups.cupsd disabled
packagekit masked
bluetooth disabled (I rarely use the laptop’s bluetooth)
blueman-mechanism disabled

With this, I was able to save a few milliseconds and decrease the enabled systemd units to 15, but the impact was negligible.

Quer no meu portátil, quer no da esposa, temos um problema irritante com o microfone de cada equipamento quando usamos o Jitsi Meet, Skype, Messenger e outras aplicações do género. A situação é a seguinte: quando o volume do micro está baixo, não se ouve nada; aumentando, só se ouve distorção que dá uma dor de cabeça horrível.

Andei uns dias de volta do alsa ou do pulseaudio, porque pensava que o problema era aí, até que descobri a solução no askubuntu. Resumidamente, basta instalar o pavucontrol, ir aos dispositivos de entrada, destrancar os canais do microfone interno e colocar o canal direito a 0.

Lately, the repository has been taking +10 hours to compile all the packages. I think that’s a lot for a little more than 250 packages, most of them small utilities and/or _-bin_ files from AUR, built in a DEV1-L (4 cores, 8 Gb RAM) virtual machine from Scaleway.

After investigating the matter, I found out that 12 of the packages took four hours and sixteen minutes to build.

In the start of July 2019, I wrote about using the spare CPU cycles in my VPS to contribute to Folding@home (F@h). Since then, when not building packages for Arch Linux, the virtual machine has been crushing numbers as a peer in this project.

Today, I’ve switched to Boinc with the Rosetta@home project. This change was due to the fact that Boinc is a free software application, whereas F@h is proprietary. I’m still contributing to fight COVID-19 (I chose the Rosetta@home project because of this), I’ve just changed the application I’m using.

Ingredientes

2 canecas de farinha (o post no reddit menciona “all purpose flour”. será que é tipo 55?)
1/4 caneca de açúcar
4 colheres de chá de fermento (será de padeiro?)
1/2 colher de chá de sal
1 1/3 caneca de leite
1/2 caneca de manteiga de amendoim

Preparação

Pré-aquecer o forno a 160ºC (a receita menciona 327ºF, que corresponde a 162.78ºC). Depois, misturam-se os ingredientes secos, de seguida acrescenta-se o leite e por último a manteiga de amendoim.

Sou cliente NOS há algum tempo, com um serviço (tarifário de 20MB) que funciona pela rede móvel mas que é comercializado pela operadora como fixo. Recentemente até refidelizei o meu contrato porque, apesar de algumas vezes aplicarem traffic shaping, estava relativamente satisfeito. Vá, estava mais ou menos satisfeito, mas aplicaram-me um desconto de 20% e lá acabei por refidelizar o contrato.

No final de Janeiro, ainda mal se falava da COVID-19, fiquei de baixa por questões de saúde que não estão relacionadas com esta pandemia. Ao passar mais tempo em casa, é natural que use mais a Internet, até porque subscrevo Netflix e Meo Go, e estes serviços têm sido a minha companhia nas muitas noites e dias sem dormir.

Updates to Jarvis, my Arch buildbot

My Arch buildbot, Jarvis, received an update today in the options logic. Now, it can receive an argument in the add (-a) and delete (-d) options, so the user can specify the package to add or delete.

The option to add a package, for now, only works for AUR. If you want to add a package that’s not in AUR, you’ll need to manually add the submodule. In the future, Jarvis will allow you to use a git repository with a PKGBUILD file.

Hoje, graças a ela, que tentou ver um vídeo do Miguel Sousa Tavares no site da TVI24, apercebi-me que as páginas com vídeos daquele endereço mostravam o spam do Nónio. “Estranho”, pensei eu. “Isto devia estar bloqueado”.

Uma análise inicial levou-me a pensar que o culpado era um script relacionado com o leitor de vídeo que utilizam, devido à presença da palavra-chave nonio no código. Isto acabou por se revelar errado.

Há já algum tempo que tenho vindo a ficar desapontado com o estado atual das redes sociais que utilizo mais frequentemente: Facebook e Twitter. Em ambas há muita polarização de opiniões, uma presença forte e irritante do politicamente correto, partilha de informação falsa e/ou coisas que sem pés nem cabeça, e um massajar constante de egos entre utilizadores.

Se a tua reação foi “qual a novidade?”, eu confesso que ainda sou do tempo em que era possível ter uma discussão - daquelas em que debates ideias e não daquelas em que quase andas à porrada - com pessoas com opiniões diferentes, principalmente no Twitter. In the last 5 months or so (I’m really bad with dates), I’ve been improving the first tactic I built for Football Manager 2019. This was done using the latest official game update at the time of writing.

Before this, I was using a tactic made by some user from fmscout.com. I can’t really recall which was but I had good results, yet would notice some instability in the performance every few games even against weaker adversaries. Playing with Benfica, I would be league champion but with one or two defeats, and a few ties. Of course, winning the Champions League would be a really hard thing to accomplish.

A few notes about Opera and Vivaldi

These are a few notes about Opera and Vivaldi web browser’s when compared to Firefox, after using both for a week.

The good

sleek interface (both but I became more fond of Opera in this regard)
functionality (both)
some sort of adblocker included (both)
integrated VPN in Opera (although I have mixed feelings about this, since it’s proprietary as far as I can tell)

The bad

resource usage bigger than Firefox in my system (both)
slower than Firefox, using default configs (both)
proprietary (both)

I’ve been a Firefox user since version 1.0, and the Mozilla Suite before that. Shamefully, I also used the infamous Internet Explorer long before that crap evolved to something close to a browser but not quite and still shitty.

I got the new, event and flex-based, Twitter design a few days ago and decided to try out the night mode. This was also influenced by some tweet a contact of mine published.

While not bad, I don’t like what I think is an exaggerated use of blue hues and shades. I find it even worse at night, due to the blue light stuff impacting our sleep. Even with a blue light filter, like the one from Plasma, it’s still too much blue.

Há uns tempos atrás, criei um repositório no Github com uma lista de bloqueio para adblockers com regras específicas para a plataforma Nonio, baseada numa outra lista feita para com suporte apenas para o uMatrix.

Esta lista manteve-se inalterada até há 17 dias, quando o Pedro Fonseca submeteu um pull request com regras para o site d’O Público, fechando também assim o bug #3. Nas duas semanas e pouco seguintes, recebei mais alguns pull requests no repositório, melhorando bastante a lista de bloqueio.

Ever since Carlos Silva left a comment on my last post about this repository, I was left wondering if it wouldn’t be better to migrate my current VM to Scaleway. The price/specs seemed better and for the marginal difference of €1 I would get a dual-core virtual machine with 2GB of RAM and 50Gb of disk space.

After a couple of weeks of reflection, I bought a “Start1-S” VPS for €3,99/month and I’ve been (successfully) testing aurto to manage the repository updates. Things have been working out so great that I bought the userrepository.eu domain.

Due to my own dumbness (I mistakenly deleted my Ubuntu partition), I installed Manjaro, using the Manjaro Architect release, on my laptop. I’d been thinking about doing it for a while and finally made it because I was too stupid to read the instructions from cfdisk. The shit you create yourself because you’re in a hurry…

Anyway, after installing Manjaro, I started reading a bit about this distro packaging and how I could leverage AUR and binary packages. Inspired by the work of Arcan1s, I bought a cheap VPS from OVH [almost €3/month] and built my repository using Arcan1s scripts. It took a bit of fiddling around the config file and the scripts to customize it to the VPS low raw power, but I eventually got it.

I’ve patched the next GTK theme for Gnome, for a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The changes include reducing the CSD height, changing the padding on some buttons and decreasing Gnome Terminal tabs height.

There are still some bugs with the theme. For example, Eye of Gnome still has a huge CSD height. I’ll hopefully fix this in the near future, if doable via theming.

Feel free to clone it or fork it.

I’ve started reading The Darkening Age, a book by Catherine Nixey about the destruction Christianity brought to the other religions in its early days. This was a recommendation André Esteves made to me on Twitter and I’m glad he did it. I’ve just finished the prologue and was so blown by how it ends that I stopped reading it so I could publish this.

Mere decapitation wasn’t enough. More blows fell, scalping Athena, striking the helmet from the goddess’s head, smashing it into pieces. Further blows followed. The statue fell from its pedestal, then the arms and shoulders were chopped off. The body was left on its front in the dirt; the nearby altar was sliced off just above its base.

The votive lamps, no longer tended, went out. On the floor, the head of Athena slowly started to be covered by the sands of the Syrian desert.

Loving the Plasma Desktop

In the last few weeks, I’ve been using the Plasma Desktop full time in Ubuntu with the Kubuntu Backports PPA enabled. This way I can get the latest version of this desktop environment on Ubuntu 18.10.

The latest Plasma Desktop version is 5.14 and it’s really amazing. On my hardware, it uses less resources than Gnome Shell, although it takes more time to get to the destkop. And the best part is not having the Gnome Shell process eating up more than 1GB or 2GB of RAM (even after the garbage collection patches).

Yesterday, I had to reinstall Windows 10 on a computer because the owner was complaining it was too slow. After a successful, albeit slow, reinstall, I had to change the language.

This computer had Windows in English and the owner wanted it in European Portuguese. So, after reinstalling the OS, I selected the European Portuguese language in the system options (or whatever it is called) and chose the pt-PT langpack.

Lately, I’ve been switching between Gnome and Plasma. Both are great desktop environments and, like all the other software in the world, both have some shortcomings. So, this is not a flamewar post, nor is intended to start yet another one.

Yesterday, I logged on a Plasma session and opened Firefox to check my email, social network accounts and read the news. Moments after firing up the browser, I got a Plasma notification about an integration with my browser of choice. I clicked on it and it opened the page for an add-on on the official add-ons website for Firefox.

Popular Science published an article on May 2018, that I only just read, about flaws in the concept of IQ and IQ tests. The text actually presents some good arguments. From the article:

About 7 or 8 years ago, I was diagnosed with IBS. If you don’t know what it is, it stands for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and it’s a functional gastrointestinal disorder that’s estimated to affect 10% to 15% of the world population.

In most cases, as far as I know, a simple change in diet allows one to keep the symptoms mostly at bay and have a normal life. For some unlucky few, it will fuck up their life in ways they can’t imagine. And I don’t mean quitting coffee like I had to do (I had an gigantic headache during the first two weeks after quitting) or develop a lactose intolerance (like I also did) that forced me to exclude even more food from my diet. I mean things like wanting to go out with your girlfriend and/or friends but choosing to stay at home because your bowl feels a little strange and that’s always a sign that acute pain or some other symptom is just around the corner. Or feeling outright tired for no reason other than being in pain.

New laptop

A few days ago I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 320-15AST. I had a budget of €400 and, after browsing a few stores for a couple of hours, I found this one for a bit less than €350.

At the hardware level, the computer has reasonable specs. They are (retrieved from inxi):

CPU: AMD A9-9420 dual core (1397MHz/3000MHz | boost: 3600MHz)
GPU: AMD Radeon R7 M260/M265
HDD: 1000.2GB 5400RPM
RAM: 8GB DDR4

This is the first time I’m buying Lenovo. I’ve always had a preference for Asus that dates around two decades, either in laptops or in desktops and components. Also, I haven’t used AMD for probably 10 years or more, but I have good memories of their CPUs at the time, so let’s see how this goes. The expectations are high.

Não fazia ideia até ter tido a ideia de escrever este post, mas tenho conta no Spotify desde pelo menos Janeiro de 2013, que é a data do email mais antigo (do serviço) que encontro na minha caixa de correio. I’m not referring to writing a live ISO to a USB drive; I really mean having the distribution installed like it would be on an hard drive. An easy way to achieve this is using the virtualization software Qemu. Example:

In this example, the -hda /dev/sdb part tells Qemu that the device /dev/sdb (the USB drive) must be used as an hard drive.

NASA open-sources its mini Mars rover, turns out to be a son of a (r)Pi

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) developed a mini version of the Mars Curiosity Rover, and open sourced the design and software used. The source is hosted at the agency’s Github account.

The project uses mostly consumer off-the-shelf parts. One of them is a Raspberry Pi, used as the “brain” of the rover.

JPL is always looking to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and roboticists to help us explore and learn about our solar system (and beyond!). We release the plans for this rover as a way to try and give budding enthusiasts a fun robotics project that will help teach them and get them involved in robotics sooner and at a lower cost.

note-keeper, a script for your note taking needs

note-keeper is a small bash script to simplify the creation, editing and management of notes. It uses the text editor set up in the $EDITOR environment variable, but if that variable is empty it defaults to Vim in insert mode.

Step aside, Kepler, TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) is in town and ready to discover more exoplanets (planets outside of our solar system) and closer to “home”.

From Engadget:

TESS is a follow-up to Kepler, a spacecraft that has spent the last nine years searching for Earth-like exoplanets near Sun-like stars. Though it may be on its last legs, Kepler has already found 2,650 confirmed exoplanets and even more are expected to be discovered from the data it has collected. But Kepler was designed to focus on a small section of the sky and while it spotted many exoplanets, a lot of them were very far away from Earth. TESS, however, will eventually map about 85 percent of the sky and it will attempt to spot exoplanets a bit closer to Earth – which allow other telescopes to study them more thoroughly.

Chegou ao fim aquele que foi o primeiro de dois fins-de-semana deste verão em que consigo ir passear para a praia. Ele foi passado na Costa Oeste, entre Peniche, Atouguia da Baleia, São Martinho do Porto e mais uns locais.

Estes dois dias foram uma ótima oportunidade para comer peixe grelhado, apanhar um bronze à camionista e ensinar a minha co-piloto a interpretar o mapa que aparece na aplicação Google Maps. A parte da interpretação do mapa é um trabalho em progresso e provavelmente nunca vai deixar de o ser, mas houve claras melhorias. ;)

This post lacks an example image because I’ve recovered it from a backup (with only text and no image) and I’m not using Void Linux at the moment. If you follow this guide and decide to share an image, I’ll gladly use it here and give you credit.

This guide assumes you are using Void Linux (you can probably replicate it in other distributions; just check the paths), have Freetype installed and using some sort of Window Manager or Desktop Environment. If you don’t, sudo xi them. After that, fire up a terminal and create a symbolic link, from the following files in /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/, to /etc/fonts/conf.d:
